It is a prescription-only contraceptive vaginal ring manufactured by Merck (formerly Schering-Plough) that contains a combination of desogestrel and estrogen hormones. It was approved for use in the United States in 2002 and is used by approximately 1.5 million women worldwide today. It is alleged that NuvaRing has caused numerous serious and potentially life-altering side effects.
