GM Ignition Switch Lawsuits

Posted In: Product Liability

Slater Slater Schulman LLP is currently representing victims of Defective GM Ignition Switches nationwide resulting from accidents caused by recalled General Motors vehicles. Recent allegations and admissions by General Motors show that GM knowingly failed to recall defective ignition switches from over twenty of its models, resulting in serious and sometimes fatal accidents. This ignition switch defect made it possible for the car’s engine and electrical system to shut off while in use, which would in turn disable the airbags, power steering and power brakes while victims were driving.

GM was aware of this defect for over a decade and failed to inform government safety regulators and the public. Despite GM’s initial claim when it initiated the recall of its vehicles in 2014 that there were thirteen deaths attributed to its faulty ignitions, that number of fatalities has dramatically increased (to approximately 200 and possibly much larger), and the defect has been implicated in the deaths and serious injuries to thousands of individuals where the front airbags did not deploy. Amazingly, it has been reported that GM could have fixed the defective switch for less than one dollar per vehicle.

GM Ignition Switch Recall Lawsuits

There have been hundreds of recalls for defective ignition switches in General Motors vehicles. It became clear just how dangerous these vehicles were as more and more owners complained of their car engines shutting off while driving.

Finally in early 2014, GM started announcing recalls (see the expanded list below) of countless of its models that were affected by this defect. General Motors provides “official” information about these recalls on the website, http://www.gmignitionupdate.com. To date, over two million GM cars manufactured over the past decade have been recalled, with possibilities of more to come.

Legal Rights Of Those Injured By Defective Cars

When American consumers suffer injuries due to defective products, they are entitled to pursue their rights at law. Product liability lawsuits make it possible for GM ignition switch victims to get compensation for their serious injuries. Automakers have a legal duty to produce cars that are safe. Furthermore, they must be proactive and correct any known safety defects, both as a matter of corporate responsibility and as a matter of law. Damages in personal injury lawsuits against auto manufacturers for selling defective vehicles with safety flaws include:

  • Past and future physical pain and suffering, mental anguish and physical impairment;
  • Past and future medical, incidental and hospital expenses;
  • Past and future loss of earnings and earning capacity; and
  • Punitive damages in cases of egregious misconduct.

If the driver or occupant was killed, surviving family members may file a wrongful death lawsuit. If you or a loved one has been injured or killed in one of the above listed GM vehicles please call the attorneys at Slater Slater Schulman LLP immediately as time is running out to bring a lawsuit.vFor a free consultation fill out the form on this page or call us at (800) 251-6990.
